Thursday Meeting

It was pointed out to me, by Isabelle (Core 5 Instructor) that the strength in using a metaphor (ink) to provide a cohesive look to the website, is the associations that already exist for the user towards materials. These objects used by Andres pencil, eraser, ink, etc... and their connotations have the possibilty to serve as points to connect pages (navigation).
Conversations Section (update); Jon Izen
Andres Miranda collaborator Jon Izen (Port Moody Blues), has responded to questionaire. This information will be added to conversations section of website with image of his work and web link to other work online.

Web Trails

I'm currently trying out various tutorials about mouse trails (http://www.webwasp.co.uk/tutorials/136/index.php), I am able through these tutorials to create a series of circles that follow the motion of the mouse then fade out. This seems like a useful tool to create more interaction, much like the pencil in the Leo Burnett site. Yet, I feel that the trail should mimick the random forms of an ink blob. A website promoting Jackson Pollock has a screen that creates random ink blobs, by Stamen(http://www.jacksonpollock.org/)
andresmiranda.ca redesign blurb
A redesign of Canadian animator and graphic artist Andres Miranda’s portfolio website. Changes implemented increase context and interaction for the user, creating greater engagement in showcased material. The site uses materials used in the MIranda’s process, as well as the artist’s illustrative use of sharp contrast, to create an overall visual style. Navigation employs both experiential as well as straight-forward approaches to accessing illustrative works, film, and video clips.
Donnie Darko Website

This Donnie Darko website done by hi-res!, a London based design company is as interesting as it is frustrating. There are some very effective uses of sound to create a suspenseful mood, and the visual nod to the computer interface (viewer window), gives a sense of realism. The interface confuses the viewer with random hot spots and yes or no questions as buttons which lead to incomprehensible screens, that begin on the bottom right, which is a geography of the screen much ignored by users. The last page has button states which react, but have no clear destination, as much as I understand the website as a conceptual piece, I believe that this site can only be succesful as an acoutrament to a more coherant film.
